America's first Arabic immersion school planned in Fremont

The Bay Area is quite a multilingual place, being so culturally diverse. The ethnic communities that live here have shaped the education scene, too, playing a pioneering role for diverse communities nationwide. The country’s first Chinese immersion school was started in San Francisco 25 years ago, and now, another first for the nation will be born in the East Bay city of Fremont. FAME, short for Families of Alameda County for Multilingual Education, is a public charter school with campuses in Fremont and San Leandro. For eight years, it has been serving the Middle Eastern and South East Asian immigrant populations in the East Bay. Now, FAME is planning the first K through 12 Arabic immersion program in the country, and has recently started an interesting partnership- with the FBI. Maram Alaiwat is the founder of FAME.

If you're curious about the FBI Junior Special Agents program mentioned in the above interview with Maram Alaiwat, founder of FAME Charter School in Fremont, here's a video of the program in action at Arizona Cultural Academy, a Muslim community school on Phoenix, AZ, from the Spring of 2009.
This is the same program that is to be implemented at FAME if its charter is approved by the Alameda County Board of Education. It would be the first such program in the Bay Area in a decade. We'll update you on the Board's decision, which is expected by mid January.
