Dennis Herrera fights "Gender Rating"
The practice of "gender rating" has been part of the insurance industry for decades. Insurance companies rate a person's risk level according to many factors, including if they're a man or woman. And women are seen as more expensive- higher maintenance if you will- and are therefore paying more than men. It may sound like an outdated concept, but It's still the law in all but 10 states nationwide. And the great State of California is not one of them. San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera wants to change that. So he's suing State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner- to get rid of the gender rating practice and declare it unconstitutional. Hana Baba sat down with Attorney Herrera at his office in City Hall to find out more about his lawsuit.
