Caltrain riders: ask and ye shall receive

As Caltrain gets ready to approve fare hikes and service reductions later this week, some riders are actually happy: the agency can't avoid making the cuts, but it's letting the riders guide how they do it. John Murphy, who talked to me for my recent piece on Caltrain, just wrote me to say that agency staff are recommending a three-month minimum trial of bullet train service on the weekend. It's a triumph: Murphy thinks adding weekend service will earn Caltrain new riders by making the train more attractive to people who just want to come to San Francisco for, say, a Giants game. His petition encouraging the agency to try it garnered hundreds of signatures. Will the plan work? We'll check back after the trial period and let you know.
