San Jose continuation high school ranks 5th best in state

This week, 12 out of 525 continuation high schools throughout the state were crowned "2010 Model Continuation High Schools" by State Superindendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell. The Model Continuation High School Recognition Program is a partnership of the California Department of Education and the California Continuation Education Association.

Coming in at 5th place, the only Bay Area school on the list- San Jose's Boynton High School.

Continuation high schools provide special programs for troubled students- sixteen years or older- who lack sufficient school credits and are at risk for not graduating high school. They focus on school-to-career education, with flexible schedules and close guidance and counseling.

To encourage students to stay in school and on track, Boynton High School has a  students' "Scholar Club". To be included, the student must maintain a GPA of 3.0, have an exemplary attendence record, and have no discipline problems.
