The sun is finally out and the temps are rising. From festivals to butterfly gardens, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the great weather this weekend throughout the Bay Area. Welcome to your art and culture weekend edition:
Friday – Sunday
Harmony Festival// Listen to the sweet sounds of the Flaming Lips, Michael Franti, and many more this weekend at the 33rd annual Harmony Festival. There is something for everyone, including a Crafters Village and Bazar, Eco Village, Steampunk Garage, and Kids Zone. A festive group of stiltwalkers, bubble artists, and children will lead the People Parade through the festival grounds. // Details: Friday, June 10 at 12 pm to Sunday, June 12 at 8 pm. Location: Sonoma County Fairgrounds Santa Rosa, CA. Cost: $45-$120.
Friday June 10th
Bites on Broadway// Hey foodies, this Friday will be the first Bites on Broadway. Food-trucks will line Broadway Boulevard serving up mouthwatering bites such as pulled pork sandwiches, tamales, mac and cheese, and much more. // Details: Starts June 10. Fridays, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Continues through Oct. 21. Location: Oakland Tech High School, 4351 Broadway. Cost: Free.
Still Black, Still Proud// An African tribute to the godfather of soul, James Brown. Artists Pee Wee Ellis, Vusi Mahlasela, Meklit Hadero, and more will be bridging the dynamic sounds of soul, funk, and contemporary African music. // Details: Thursday, June 9 and Friday June 10, from 8 pm – 10 pm. Location: Yoshi’s Oakland, 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland. Cost: $20.
Saturday – Sunday
Ethnic Dance Festival// Let’s take a trip around the world in one weekend at the 33rd annual Ethnic Dance Festival. This weekend you can see belly dancers, ballet Folklórico, and Balinese blessing dancers. // Details: June 11, 8 p.m. and June 12, 3 p.m. Location: UC Berkeley (across from the Musical Offering, 2430 Bancroft Way) Zellerbach Hall. Cost: $18-$58.
East Bay Open Studios 2011// Open studio tours are like treasure hunts and what better way to spend the first warm weekend? Grab a map listing over 400 artists in 14 cities in the East Bay from Pro Arts or in the East Bay Express. // Details: June 4 - 5 and June 11 - 12, 11 AM - 6 PM. Location: Pro Arts, 150 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland. Cost: Free.
Saturday June 11th
The Butterfly Garden// Let butterflies kiss your skin, watch humming birds, and learn how to create a butterfly garden this weekend. // Details: Second Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Location: Coyote Hills Regional Park, 8000 Patterson Ranch Rd., Fremont. Cost: Parking Fee $5 per vehicle; $4 per trailered vehicle. Buses: $25/per bus.
Sunday June 12th
Batey Boricua: Celebrando Nuestra Musica// You will not be able to contain your hips watching colorful skirts twirl and hands thump on drums at the monthly Bomba jam session. Batey Boricua will be celebrating Puerto Rican heritage and music. // Details: June 12, 3 pm – 6 pm. Location: La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Ave. Berkeley. Cost: $5-10 sliding scale.
