Arts/Culture/Weekend: For $5 or less

Bad Movie Night at The Dark Room

Who said San Francisco is an expensive city?

Okay, maybe when it comes to housing and five-star cuisine, but if you're interested in spending little to no money on going out, every weekend there are events and destinations around the city that have YOU in mind.

For instance, eclectic music-lovers can enjoy a mix of hip hop, jazz, funk and soul for only $5 tonight at the Listening Lounge, hosted by the Minna Gallery (you have to get there by 10:30pm and RSVP for the discount).  The event is in its third year, and prides itself on avoiding the Top 40 tunes, in favor of the independent and truly original of all music genres.

Or if you don't even want to spend a dime, you can see and hear the Art of Noise tonight at the Project One Gallery for FREE.  It's an event of music, and art inspired by music, and it's part of Noise Pop 2010, which kicks off this weekend. Now in its 18th year, the week-long music festival prides itself on "showcasing the best local music alongside national and international indie rock favorites."  Check out the festival's website for other cool events, including Yoko Ono's first musical appearance in the Bay Area in the past 14 years, happening this coming Tuesday.

And on Sunday night, for a measly five bucks you can go to the Dark Room for Bad Movie Night, a weekly event where audiences and hosts take turns verbally abusing and laughing at Hollywood blockbusters gone horrible.  This week's pick, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three starring John Travolta, with future showings that include X Men: Wolverine and High School Musical Three.

This last event is kind of random, but that's what you get when you are looking for fun on the cheap: Do you happen to like sauerkraut?  Well, on Sunday the Rainbow Grocery Cooperative will be hosting two free workshops on how to make your own. Touted as "an easy-to-make traditional healing food with many benefits including optimizing digestion and boosting the immune system", I guess it's double-good for you if it's homemade, right?

Do you know of a cool event coming up in the Bay Area?  Let us know by giving us a call at 415-264-7106, or drop us an email at news@kalw.org.

Actually, Steven, I only meant to highlight the Art of Noise event, which was free.  I included a note about Yoko just because I found it interesting :)  There are actually a few more free events as part of the Noise Pop festival -- including a film festival and a photography show.  Here's the calendar for the rest of the festival events.

I SO wanted to go to the sauerkraut workshop this weekend, but sadly couldn't make it. Anyone know of another one coming up?

Oh boy! Yoko Ono and sauerkraut lessons! (Cheapest tickets for Yoko are $34, BTW. Is that considered cheap?)

If that's what the Bay Area has to offer in the bargain bin, we might want to take BART out to Concord and try affordable culture there~! (Nothing against Concord, it's just that you get a longer ride for your BART ticket if you go that far.)
